Celebrating Mother’s Day 2019 | Encouraging Words for Godly Mothers Everywhere

reading bible

If you’re a mother, you know the selflessness it takes to raise a child and fully step into such roles as caretaker, wife, and spiritual teacher—just to name a few.

Mothers are unique in God’s design. Though it might be difficult to see the Lord’s plan for mothers in our fallen world, it does come into view when we read about the first mother, Eve.

God explained how she was Adam’s companion and helper—she perfectly suited him and he perfectly suited her. They wonderfully complemented each other, and through both sets of hands, were able to take dominion over the earth.

God’s Word for Godly Mothers

The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed…

“Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it… And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them… But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.

“And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.”—Genesis 2:8, 15, 18-22

If you read this entire passage in Genesis closely, you’ll notice that…

You see, Adam could not fulfill his role as a father if Eve was not present to be a mother. The two were to become one—ultimately setting up a picture of the covenant that was to come between God and His people.

You’ve heard the saying, “Behind every great man is a woman.” Perhaps this was its origin.

We see next that God gave instruction for man and woman: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24).

A Picture of the Future

Even in the beginning, we see the Lord using Adam and Eve to set the stage for fathers and mothers to leave their old lives to become one. Isn’t this what we are called to do when we become followers of Christ?

To honor our mothers in love and to stay aligned with God’s Word in regard to what He says about mothers and women, we must view their role, not as supplementary to the family, but as equally important to the father. A different role? Yes.

But today, mothers are swamped with outside pressures that can quickly tear them down from the inside out. As those who support, love, cherish, and adore them, we can provide encouragement this Mother’s Day.
