Even when God is silent on one topic, He is never mute. God is always speaking, and what is more, He is always speaking to His children… you and me!
For most of us, there has probably been a time when we have thought, “things would be better if only God would speak to me… if only He would direct me…” about what to do and when.
And yes, there are things God chooses not to tell us, or rather, not to tell us yet. However, God is always speaking…
He is never silent.
“Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you [and even show you] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which you do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.”—Jeremiah 33:3 (AMP)
God’s Voice:
We may ask, “if God is always speaking, what does His voice sound like?” That is no easy question, yet, somehow it is infinitely so…
God’s voice sounds identical to His Word. Often it can be felt inside our hearts, while other times we may physically hear or see His voice. And while there are seasons and purposes for each, His voice speaks always through His Word. It is the place we can go if we are ever unsure or struggling to hear Him…
Because, when we read His Word, we are not merely reading words from centuries past… we are hearing His voice as if He sits with us, speaking every syllable just for us. To each of us who read or hear the Bible, God is speaking to us personally, intimately, and today!
Further, God speaks His Word and nothing contrary to it. For “God is not a man, that He should lie” (Numbers 23:19). Therefore, since Jesus Himself is the Word, nothing God says can go against it, or God would be contrary to Himself. God speaks and does so consistently. His Word and voice are true!
“And the Word (Christ) became flesh, and lived among us; and we [actually] saw His glory, glory as belongs to the [One and] only begotten Son of the Father, [the Son who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, who is] full of grace and truth (absolutely free of deception).”—John 1:14 (AMP)
“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”—Numbers 23:19
Because God’s voice is not contrary to His Word, it becomes easier to recognize His voice. For instance, when we hear a voice that we believe is the Holy Spirit—speaking, guiding, and directing us—we can know it is God if it aligns with His Word. In this we are able to experience God like the prophet Elijah, finding His voice not in the wind, or the earthquake, or the fire… but in the still small voice. We can hear His voice and recognize it!
“…but the Lord was not in the wind… not in the earthquake… not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. …the Lord said to him….”—1 Kings 19:11-12, 15
The only obstacle to our hearing God’s voice is choosing not to listen—for Elijah, even when walking in fear and doubt, listened for God’s voice… he LISTENED to God.
Are we choosing to listen to God?
God is always speaking, so why are we not always hearing—always listening?
God listens to us continually. Yet, if we would only listen to Him, how much better could things be? God has given us the blessing of being able to speak like Him, but in our deafness we often misuse it. We speak in passion, whine and complain, asking continually but never listening.
If we would but first listen to our God, His voice, how improved would our speech be? How much more would we be speaking like our Father, reflecting Him, doing what He is doing… causing the blind to see, the lame to walk… speaking His Word of comfort to the wounded soul and His powerful Word to the captive?
“You can be sure of this: when the day of judgment comes, everyone will be held accountable for every careless word he has spoken.”—Matthew 12:36 (TPT)
Words hold power, and if we are willing to listen to our Father—to understand His mysteries and plans—then we can speak from a place of quiet confidence with greater power and greater authority. Not by our own might, but by His. Walking and talking like our God—our Father!

How Do We Listen to God?
One of the most important steps is to spend time with God. When you prepare for the day each morning: think on the things of God. As you travel: pray. While you wait for an appointment: contemplate on God’s Word. Before you go to sleep: thank God for all His goodness and praise Him for His faithfulness.
“But whenever you pray, go into your innermost chamber and be alone with Father God, praying to him in secret. And your Father, who sees all you do, will reward you openly.”—Matthew 6:6 (TPT)
The more time spent in fellowship with God or with Him in His Word, the fuller our capability to listen becomes. It is like anything in life, it takes consistent practice. For, when we are willing to meet Him, God will meet us in turn. He will speak and, in time, we will not merely hear, but truly listen.
“The wise will hear and increase their learning…”—Proverbs 1:5 (AMP)
Yet, we can go a step further and ask God to speak to us. Yes, God is always speaking, but when we ask for that relationship with Him, He opens heart, mind, will, and emotions—our soul—to all He is!
God is willing to open our ears and souls to His voice. Will we accept?
“I alone am the Good Shepherd, and I know those whose hearts are mine, for they recognize me and know me… My own sheep will hear my voice and I know each one, and they will follow me. I give to them the gift of eternal life and they will never be lost and no one has the power to snatch them out of my hands. My Father, who has given them to me as his gift, is the mightiest of all, and no one has the power to snatch them from my Father’s care. The Father and I are one.”—John 10:14, 27-30 (TPT)
We who belong to God are called to hear the voice of our Shepherd, Jesus. We are formed to follow after Him, but to follow fully we must hear. Our hearts need to be open to His voice in such an intimate way, that we would follow no other.
“But they will run away from strangers and never follow them because they know it’s the voice of a stranger.”—John 10:5 (TPT)
We are called to spend time with God and His Word. We are meant to seek Him out, asking God to speak to us. We are to know Him through a persistent passion—a passion to know our Creator. Because hearing God, listening to Him, is not simply so we know when to move or speak… it is so we can know Him—know our God!
